Sunkwa Kwabena, known to the world as Kwabena Sunkwa, is a Ghanaian highlife musician whose career is rooted in the rich traditions of Ghanaian highlife while embracing contemporary sounds and audiences. Now based in the United Kingdom, Sunkwa continues to champion the culture, storytelling and musical heritage of Ghana through his work. Sunkwa’s music reflects the enduring character of highlife, combining melodic songwriting, Ghanaian cultural influences and themes of love, relationships, life and personal experience. His collaboration with fellow highlife musicians has also helped keep the genre connected to a new generation of listeners. In 2021, Sunkwa released High Life Revival, an 18-track album featuring songs including Whɛ Wo Ba, Kintampo, Wo Tan Mea, Gigbodi, Abodwe Se, Adwoa, Nipa Wo Baabi Ko, Nyame Mmre3, Sika, Abɛbɛ, Odo Bra, Quality and Bra. In 2023, Sunkwa joined Naa Agyemang and K.K. Fosu on Obi Akonodie3, a collaboration that celebrated supportive women while deliberately highlighting the continuing relevance of highlife music.
